Bio:
1963 entered OJT University and have not yet graduated. First job - invited to work at an advertising agency/architectural rendering studio. They liked my lack of experience. Fabulous training. Worked for several architectural firms both as draftsmen and artist doing architectural renderings. Moved to California thanks to the US Navy. Worked for another architect/engineering firm and a drafting service. More great training and fun to boot. A local print shop asked me if I would like to come to work there. I was really curious about that technology and I did. Another invaluable learning experience. A local Sign Shop and Silk Screen operation hired me away from the print shop. I was the designer for billboards and painted them in the shop and in the field. Great experience but couldn’t take the heat ...103 degrees in the field. Post Navy we returned home to NC and owned and operated a printshop for 15 years. During those years we had #1 son who slept in a milk crate under the desk. My husband kept running the print shop and I took a turn and rented an office ‘solo’ to do all kinds of things I had learned over the years, from graphic arts to house plans. Now some 30 years later, my husband and I work together at custom house plans and stained glass design and fabrication but ... I must paint. Christmas 2000 my husband gave me a ‘really big’ easel ... Life has never been the same. It is the greatest thing to get up in the morning and say .... “I HAVE TO PAINT TODAY”.
Statement:
A day never passes that I don’t say at least once, “Oh, I want to paint that!”. I love everything about the act and process of painting. It issolitude, thought provoking, challenging in every way, both my medium and my goal. For me painting is the most demanding ‘hand-eye-mind’ coordination there is. I paint in acrylic and I love it. It is a water based medium and not with out it’s unique challenges. I can work fast or slow, a watercolor wash, or as thick as oil. I have done many things over the years in oodles of different mediums.... Painting is ‘my love’. I have ‘no favorite’ subject matter. Rarely is it the subject alone, but the light, the color, the mood, the simplicity, the difficulty and much more, that gets my attention. It continues to amaze me that the simplest subject will give the greatest challenge. That is when I have the most fun. “..... joy’s soul lies in the doing” - Shakespeare
