Bio
I began my art study at the age of nine with my father, Gao Yi-hung, who was a leading Chinese artist and the calligraphy master to Chiang Kai-shek’s son, Chiang Ching-guo, the President of the Republic of China. I also had the unique opportunity to study with some of China’s most outstanding watercolorists.
I received a Fine Arts degree from National Taiwan Normal University and studied in the graduate art program at the University of Hawaii. In 1996, Madam Lien, the wife of the Republic of China’s former Vice-President Dr. Lien Zhan, honored my art exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan.
My paintings have been exhibited at Lincoln Center and the Soho Art Museum, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Bower Museum, California; Currier Museum of Art, NH.; and the DeCordova Museum, MA. At the Copley Society of Boston, the oldest art society in the U.S., I was the first Chinese artist to be honored with both a solo exhibition and a Master Workshop program. I have been frequently interviewed by the various news media. My paintings have been widely exhibited and awarded in prestigious venues and collected internationally for over three decades.

Artist statement
I am a watercolorist who specializes in Chinese brush painting.
I use traditional Chinese brush painting techniques to paint landscapes, birds and flowers, and figures in either detail or free style. My watercolor paintings move between classic and contemporary Chinese concepts. I am also interested in the use of color from a Western perspective. Further, I freely incorporate Western concepts of composition, light, shadow, perspective, and color to explore space and to develop bolder compositions.
Each of my paintings exists as a poetic expression of the interaction between space and form. My subjects are those of traditional Chinese nature painting and the balance between the fundamental forces of Yin (female, passive, dark, mystical) and Yang (male, active, light, rational). I see Nature in this traditional sense, not as a “still life,” but in its most profound relationship to humankind as the sustainer of life and the source of life’s deepest meaning.
